The answer isn't always straightforward. Unlike contemporary furniture, many vintage designs have been in production for decades, have been reissued, or have inspired countless reproductions. Learning to recognise an authentic piece takes time, experience, and attention to detail.

Start with the Designer and Manufacturer

An iconic design is only truly authentic when it was produced by the original manufacturer or under an authorised licence. Designers such as Joe Colombo, Verner Panton, Pierre Paulin, and Eero Aarnio worked closely with manufacturers who brought their ideas to life. Knowing who made a piece is often just as important as knowing who designed it.

Look for Original Labels

Many vintage pieces still carry their original labels, stamps, or manufacturer's marks. These can often be found underneath a chair, inside a cabinet, or on the base of a lamp. While labels can provide valuable information, it's important to remember that they are only one part of the story. Over the years, labels may have disappeared, worn away, or been removed during restoration.

Study the Materials

Original Space Age furniture was often produced using innovative materials such as fiberglass, ABS plastic, polyurethane foam, aluminium, or moulded plywood. The quality of these materials, along with the way they have aged, can reveal a great deal about a piece's authenticity.

Pay Attention to the Details

Authentic vintage furniture is defined by precision. The proportions, finish, construction, and craftsmanship should reflect the standards of the original manufacturer. Small details—such as the quality of moulding, the shape of the base, or the way components fit together—often distinguish an original from a later copy.

Provenance Matters

Whenever possible, learning where a piece comes from adds another layer of confidence. Documentation, original purchase records, or a well-documented ownership history can increase both authenticity and collectability.

Condition Is Part of the Story

Many collectors believe that original condition tells a more compelling story than a perfect restoration. Small signs of age, a gentle patina, or minor wear developed over decades often reflect the life of the object. While condition certainly influences value, authenticity will always be more important than perfection.
