Verner Panton – The Visionary of Space Age Design
Danish designer Verner Panton is widely regarded as one of the most innovative figures of 20th-century design.
Born in Denmark in 1926, Panton studied architecture before beginning his career in furniture design. Early on he worked in the studio of renowned Danish designer Arne Jacobsen, but soon developed a completely different design language.
While many Scandinavian designers focused on natural materials and restrained forms, Panton embraced plastic, bright colors, and sculptural shapes.
His most famous creation is the Panton Chair, introduced in 1967 and produced by the Swiss manufacturer Vitra. It was the first chair made from a single piece of molded plastic, forming a smooth S-shaped silhouette without back legs.
The design quickly became an icon of Space Age furniture and remains one of the most recognizable chairs in design history.
Beyond individual furniture pieces, Panton was fascinated by creating complete interior environments. His experimental installations for exhibitions such as Visiona in the late 1960s transformed interiors into immersive landscapes of color, curves, and soft forms, reflecting the futuristic optimism of the era.
Today, Verner Panton’s work continues to inspire designers and collectors around the world.
At Baan Collection we curate iconic Space Age furniture and lighting from the 1960s and 1970s, celebrating designers who shaped the futuristic design movement of the era.
